In June 2002, the Council on State Governments produced an extensive report, highlighting 50 policy statements and hundreds of recommendations for improving collaboration between justice agencies and mental healthcare providers. This report came out of the work of the Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project, which was a two year initiative to develop policy recommendations and guidance on improving collaboration between the behavioral health and justice systems based on research with a broad range of highly experienced justice and health practitioners. This article summarizes the mission of the Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project and the policy statements and recommendations that resulted from this work.
