This article provides a comprehensive health profile of incarcerated populations and the communities inmates return to and an in-depth overview of existing correctional health care services.
The article outlines the health disparities that affect incarcerated populations and the communities to which inmates return upon release. The article also describes the health services that exist in correctional institutions. Building off of this, the authors provide recommendations for how public health and medical practitioners can take advantage of opportunities to improve public health that arise in correctional settings, particularly opportunities to establish outreach to medically under-served communities. Additionally they advocate for reform to reduce unproductive incarceration.
